Site Selection: Istanbul, Turkey

Choosing Istanbul, Turkey for a meeting location for a client that was hosting a group of doctors and other study staff was no easy task.  Sometimes, choosing the correct city alone can be quite a lot of work.  For instance, we were working with a company that was hosting a substantial number of Russian citizens.  And for most countries, advanced applications for Visas and other passports are required of non-citizens.   However, in Istanbul, Russians have the great fortune of coming and going as they please with no requirement for advanced requests or filings for a Visa because the Turkish government simply provides a stamp on entry.  This was truly the deciding factor for us as we were coordinating for travel management as well.  Another great reason as to what made Istanbul, Turkey a great location was that their airport was just recently renovated and upgraded to meet the demand for high class travel accommodations.

The hotel we coordinated with is called The Istanbul Edition.  The Edition is a lifestyle brand conceived by Ian Schrager in partnership with Marriott International which works to “combine the personal, intimate, individualized and unique lodging experience that Ian Schrager is known for, with the global reach, operational expertise and scale of Marriott.”

*Note – Istanbul, Turkey was listed among the Top 20 Meeting Locations for 2011 according to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).
